Brazil Nats

Well after 4 days of flying in Brazil the comp has come to an end. It appears that many of the top pilots landed within 500 m of goal on the first day blowing their final glides. The flying was obviously tricky there as the racing pilots struggled to do well. The last day was windy and many of the pilots decided not to fly despite the meet director not canceling the day. This happens a lot in Brazil and unfortunately it was a 1000 point day so those that did not fly got drilled on the scores. It was amazing to see that the ones that did not fly were the top pilots who realised that being safe was their main priorty and not results. Congratulations to Marcelo Ferro flying his Moyes Litespeed RS 4 placing very well on all of the days to take out the comp. Bogong Cup day 6

Well today was looking difficult with stronger winds already up high, it meant the odds of flying were not great. We set off to Mystic and waited on the hill for a couple of hours. We then decided that the wind was too strong now and that we should hold off for another hour in hopes of the wind dying down. After checking the winds at 2pm it was decided that the task would be the Porepunkah swimming hole. We took over the water hole and enjoyed the afternoon cooling off.

Bogong Cup task 2

Today it was off to our favourite sit Mt Buffalo. We set a 126 kms task with the first turnpoint taking us right into the high country to Mt feather top. We then had to go to Mt porepunkah then to dederang Gap and back to Mt beauty Airstrip for a total of 126kms. Gliders on launch. I decided to start in a different spot with Curt about 10kms south of the main gaggle as we had an entry start gate. We did the first start and blazed our way to the 1st turnpoint arriving nearly 10kms in front of the main gaggle.I was in front of Curt and was off to the 2nd turnpoint where I got low and had to scratch around for about 10 mins before finally getting up. Curt came in high over my head and was off in front to the last turnpoint. The gaggle was now getting closer to me but still about 5kms behind. The top 3 Curt and Michi climbing out in the gorge at Mt Buffalo. I was chasing Curt down and I managed to get high about 10kms before the last turnpoint. Curt was about 5kms in front of me and when he did the turnpoint he went west onto the hills instead of east to the Kiewa range. I did the turnpoint and went east and was now back in front but the gaggle was closing in slowly. Looking back north from the 1st Turnpoint. Curt quickly jumped the valley and was now with the gaggle just behind me. I was being a little patient just trying to stay high to make sure that I would still win the day. I went on final glide and was first in by nearly 2 mins over the Birthday boy Ollie. Curt was next in followed closely by Swiss Nick. lukas was next in then a break before gerolf arrived about 10 mins after me. A picture of me crossing goal at 115kph thanks to Tony Kenney. It was a great day out flying and about 15-20 made goal.

Bogong Cup Task 1

After 3 days of not flying everyone was keen to take to the skies. Today was looking better with lighter winds than the previous 3 days. It was just the matter of finding the right launch so that we could get a round in. After sometime we decided on going up to Mystic despite the South winds and hope that t he valley winds from the north would get us all off the hill. The task comittee Ollie,Lukas and I decided on a 121km zig zag task ending up in Mt Beauty. I was in my harness early as there was no ordered launch and was 2nd to take off behind Ollie. We climbed out and I headed over to Mt Porepunkah with Lukas and soon later Davis came over in the litesport. It was just the 3 of us over there and we had a great start at 2pm and in no time we were well in front of the others. Most of them turned back and did the 2nd start realizing that might be the smarter move. After the 1st turnpoint we were faced with some airspace and I managed to fly low just on the outside of the airpsace while Davis who made the penalty went into airspace and climbed out. I figured that cause we were so far in front we he wanted to penalize himself. After the next thermal I decided that I would hang back and let Lukas and Davis glide off as I wanted to go a different direction and have them follow me all day. It worked I headed off 45 degrees to the right back on course line and was rewarded with a 5 m climb while the others struggled in the Kiewa valley low. I did the 2nd turnpoint at Coral bank and headed onto Mt Tawonga to climb again. I raced off down the ridge finding some good lift and did a 10 km glide out into the valley for the last turnpoint. I dove back into the small hills and had to take a light climb so I could get enough height to make the glide back to the main range where the good thermals were. I did that and hit another 4m climb when I topped out Gerolf and the crew came in so I was 20kms in front of them so I knew I was going to do well as long as I did not blow it in the last 30kms. I raced off down the ridge and kept gliding to Coral bank where I found the srongest thermal of the day 5-6m and climbed until I had final glide for goal. I raced off and came into goal at 110kph 1 m off the goal line before turning around back into the wind and landing. Michi will be the next pilot in 25 mins after me then Curt one of my team memebers came in 3rd 32mins later. Davis was doing really again on the litesport but unfortunately was in airspace for to long and scored zero for the day.Hmmmmm. Many pilots made goal so it was a great task for the 1st day.
